Modern warfare is complex. An unpredictable geopolitical environment combined with improved technology creates a stronger demand for coordination with allied defense forces.

Our team of thinkers and doers is taking note of military needs, so we can play a role in shaping the future of training.

Here’s what we’re watching.

1: Crewed-Uncrewed Teaming

Combining human and AI strengths isn’t a new conversation, but when it comes to teaming, using human-crewed platforms for combat power and uncrewed assets for deep sensing or dangerous tasks will save more lives. Effective crewed / uncrewed teaming will be necessary as we develop sixth generation aircraft and beyond – and more importantly, as we build the teams of the future.

2: Cognitive Readiness

To succeed in unpredictable environments, military personnel need to be prepared for a variety of scenarios – including problem solving under stress. Through immersive, scenario-based training, real-world situations can be replicated with little or no variations.

3: Sustainable Simulation

The defense industry isn’t known for sustainability – at least not the kind that’s good for the environment. New visual display systems, like AMAZE, are reducing the footprint of a simulator dome and reducing the power, air conditioning and maintenance needed to sustain traditional simulators.

4: Gaming

Simulations save money, time and lives. Defense is behind in visualizations, gaming architecture and simulation environments. Commercial partnerships, like the one between Lockheed Martin and Unreal Engine, allow the defense industry to bring its training experience to the table, while leveraging the best of the commercial gaming industry, to generate a more realistic, security-oriented training environment.

5: Data Strategy

Delivering data is critical for better decision making. Making that data dynamic and relevant is the future.
